  • Jason Thomas Previews the Washougal National
Washougal, WA WashougalAMA Pro Motocross Championship

Washougal is far and away the most scenic venue on the Pro Motocross calendar. Nestled amongst the trees as the Washougal River winds south, it’s nearly impossible to not be speechless on one’s first visit. That wonder and awe is replaced by head scratching confusion as soon as riders hit the track, though. What appears as rich, loamy dirt is much more slippery than what meets the eye. A steadily firming process leads to less and less traction and riders must exchange early aggression for enduring finesse. That’s the riddle that is Washougal. It looks amazing, but the tricky dirt, the tree canopy inducing shadows, and the brutal roost climbing Horsepower Hill make Washougal a fickle flame.

While many of the recent rounds have offered softer dirt, riders will likely go back to a more Hangtown type setting for Washougal. It will be interesting this year, though, with rumors that a lot of sand has been dropped onto the soil. That could impact things for awhile, but the Washougal base will remain. Likely, that means the scoop tire will stay inside the hauler and suspension will be softened up. Some may lean towards a more turning-centric ergonomic setup versus a better handling, longer wheelbase look. It won’t be as rough as a track like RedBud which offers opportunity for better turning in a low traction environment. Like most things, riders will try to find balance and compromise. The key is not going too far but making sure to lean into what the track rewards.

Washougal’ start is one of the most important of the season. With a track that races narrow, passing will be a challenge all afternoon. Getting a good start and putting in quick laps early makes life much easier. Riders like Justin Cooper have found success here as first lap positioning pays big dividends. Where a track like Southwick offers huge chunks of time late in the moto, Washougal will offer closer laptimes throughout. If you ever hear a rider say they are simply trying to “hit their marks”, a slippery track like Washougal fits the bill. This track has limits and riders will attempt to sit on, not over, that limit.

Who’s Hot:

Chase Sexton has won five motos in a row and taken over this 450 championship for now. We know better than to assume anything but he looks like the Chase of old. Amazing what a little confidence can do.

Justin Cooper is desperately chasing a new contract at Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing. Podium finishes are the name of the game and he grabbed another one at Spring Creek.

I’m putting Hunter Lawrence here because I think he deserves it. He’s in his rookie season and he’s been rock solid this summer. Win or lose this title, he’s had a fantastic rookie outing.

Levi Kitchen lands here for the first time in a long while. His 1-1 finishes came out of nowhere, really, but there’s no bad time for an overall win. He rolls into his home race this weekend with a confidence rebound.

Haiden Deegan has faced all sorts of adversity this summer but his points lead continues to grow. His comments might seem puzzling at times but unless someone can stop the train, I don’t think they will stop the comments.

Casey Cochran blew the doors off expectations with a third overall at Spring Creek. I’m not even sure what the expectations were but I do know that he surpassed them.

Dilan Schwartz had a day to remember with 10-6 finishes. There’s a reason not many riders are on Suzuki 250’s but Dilan is doing the thing anyway.

Max Anstie finally got some relief for the struggle he’s been wallowing in. It only took a good thunderstorm to bring out the form of the likable Englishman.

Who’s Not:

Chance Hymas suffered an ankle injury of unknown severity while leading the second moto. If he can race Washougal, it will likely be a painful day.

Garrett Marchbanks didn’t have a good afternoon at Millville and I think there’s more to that unfolding story than we know as of now.

Bold Predictions:

Haiden Deegan takes offense to Levi Kitchen being from Washougal and vows vengeance.

America and the civilized world rejoice as I don’t mention the phrase “scoop tire” once on Saturday.

Garrett Marchbanks is a no show at Washougal.

My Picks:

Haiden

Levi

450
