Morning Report

Today’s race will bring us the third and final Triple Crown event of 2024 as the championship also visits its final indoor venue of the 17-round series. This event will also be the seventh round of the 250SX West Region Championship and will be a Supercross Futures qualifying round, so there will be a lot of action to follow on the track today.

After a big win last weekend in his home area in the PNW, Levi Kitchen (131 points) enters today’s race with an eight-point lead over RJ Hampshire (123 points) in the 250SX West Region Championship, a 21-point lead over Jordon Smith (110 points), and a 26-point lead over Garrett Marchbanks (105 points), and a 37-point gap over Jo Shimoda (94 points). Maybe it was some of that home cooking and home field advantage, but Kitchen was on another level last weekend, taking the win by over 20 seconds—the largest gap at the finish line we have seen so far in any division this season. The Washington native’s first two career SX wins were Triple Crown overall wins, so we will see if he is able to back up his dominating win last weekend with another win in the three-race Triple Crown format. Hampshire admitted last week he could not match the speed of Kitchen. The Husqvarna rider won the ’22 St. Louis event—a Triple Crown overall—and he is hoping to have an answer against Kitchen today. After a rough start to the season, Shimoda earned his second consecutive podium last weekend as he looks to build through the end of this season, although the championship hopes are almost gone for the #30. Smith and Nate Thrasher also have wins on this season and could be in the mix for race wins and/or overall podiums. And do not forget Garrett Marchbanks. The #26 machine has been on a tear lately, although his rides have been a little under the radar since he has not finished on the podium for a few rounds now. Bad starts have forced him to make a lot of passes. Wonder what a good start could do for the Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha rider.

In the premier class, Jett Lawrence’s win streak ended at three straight wins before a third-place finish in Seattle, Washington. Seattle main event winner Cooper Webb clawed back a handful of points on the series leader, but Jett (230 points) still has a 16-point gap over the #2 machine. Chase Sexton, 2023 450SX Champion, fought to the finish last weekend but barely came up short, about half a second back of Webb. The #1 enters this weekend third in the standings, 23 points down from Jett Lawrence. We have seen five different winners so far this season (Jett Lawrence, Webb, Sexton, Ken Roczen, and Aaron Plessinger), but Eli Tomac and Jason Anderson have yet to win. Could the St. Louis SX round be the first win of the season for either the #3 or #21? Each have won a Triple Crown race, but not overall, so far this season. How will they fare today?

And in terms of Supercross Futures, we will see Cole Davies and Drew Adams (winners from the first two events this season), Casey Cochran, Landon Gibson, Gavin Towers, Mark Fineis, Trevin Nelson, Reven Gordon, Klark Robbins, Luke Fauser, and a host of other fast, up-and-coming names. But we will also see Ryder McNabb making his SX Futures debut. The two-time 250cc Canadian Motocross Champion came to the U.S. last summer for the RedBud National Scouting Moto Combine amateur event, where he finished 2-3 for second overall, and said he wanted to come race full-time in the U.S. if he could.

“I want to race down here,” he said after the combine event last July. “If I can get something down here, I’d definitely like to do it and I’d like to get a shot down here. I think I can do good.”

McNabb was able to land a ride on the AEO Powersports KTM team for 2024.

First Qualifying Sessions

250SX

RJ Hampshire topped the first qualifying session with a 57.311 over Jordon Smith’s 57.481, Jo Shimoda’s 47.526, Levi Kitchen’s 57.652, and Carson Mumford’s 47.738.

“It’s going to be a tough night,” Hampshire said. “The track is going to break down a lot. It’s going to be important to hit your marks.”

Michael Mosiman had a big case that resulted in a fast-first slam and pile drive by his YZ250F! Luckily, the Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider was cleared by the Alpinestars medial crew moments later and it appears he will be okay to continue throughout the rest of the day. Watch Mosiman's crash below.

450SX

The 450SX field got the green flag, Jason Anderson led the field. Two laps in and the fast laps start coming in. Eli Tomac was on top of the board early with a 56.421. The #3 put down a few good laps. His next fastest lap was a 56.160, although Jett Lawrence put down a barely faster lap, a 56.015! Then a lap or two later, Jettson put down a 55.253 as he started to really find his grove. Chase Sexton then went out and put down a sub-56 lap of his own, a 55.795. Jett Lawrence topped the field with his 55.253.

“it makes it a lot easier to get to fast laps when the track has a nice flow to it,” Lawrence said.

Jeremy Hand (59.746) topped the 450SX group B session and Zack Williams (1:02.711) topped the 450SX group C session. These times will count for overall qualifying, which is more important than normal as this weekend is a Triple Crown format and we only take the top 18 fastest qualifiers. Then we will take the final four spots from the LCQ races.

Second Qualifying Sessions

250SX

Jordon Smith and Julien Beaumer got out front off of the second 250SX group A qualifying session. Smith's 57.208 was the fast time early in this session, which moved him into P1 overall on the day over Hampshire's 57.311 from the first session as the track got faster. Levi Kitchen put down a 57.068 but then Hampshire put down a 55.956 to move back into P1 overall. The points leader then bettered his time to a 56.660 as Carson Mumford dropped a great heater, a 56.978, to move into third behind Hampshire and Kitchen. Hampshire's 55.956 was the top overall qualifying 250SX time for the day. Mumford getting third in this session was big for the #41. A great start to the day for the Honda rider. Mumford rode really well last weekend in Seattle and looks like he is building momentum since the 250SX West Region returned from break. He got 19th in the Arlington SX 450SX main event and it looks like he brought some more aggression in last week's 250SX main event and today's qualifying session.

Hunter Lawrence got the holeshot off the fake start of the second 450SX group A qualifying session. Jett Lawrence and Justin Cooper traded fast laps for the top spot both in the session and overall. Cooper dropped a 55.007, followed by a 55.008 by Lawrence. Then, on his final hot lap, the #18 Honda CRF450R machine put down a blazing 54.837 to top the board overall. Cooper Webb, Eli Tomac, and Chase Sexton rounded out the top five. Ty Masterpool topped the 450SX group B qualifying session with a 58.177.

LCQs

250SX

The gates dropped on the LCQ, and it was Maxwell Sanford who put his Kawasaki KX250 out front of the field early as Talon Hawkins trailed, or hawked, close behind. The KTM rider made a quick and clean pass for the lead after the finish line and cruised to the checkered flag a handful of laps later. Geran Stapleton and Josh Varize both got around Slade Varola and into transfer spots behind Hawkins and Sanford. Then, Sanford ran into trouble as he went down, dropping well outside of a transfer spot. This bumped up Stapleton to P2, Varize to P3, and fifth-place Matti Jorgensen to the fourth and final transfer spot with about two laps to go. That is the order they would finish in at the checkered flag.

450SX

The gates dropped on the 450SX LCQ, and it was Colt Nichols who jumped ahead of Vince Friese and the rest of the field. Friese clipped the leader Tuff Block on the inside of the track going into the second turn, which sent him towards the middle of the lane and into a handful of riders, a few of whom got stalled up and/or bumped off the track. Nichols ran away with the race win out front, uncontested, while Cade Clason got by a few riders and eventually Friese to take over second. Jeremy Hand capitalized on a stall by Friese to move into third, which bumped the #125 machine to fourth. Mitchell Harrison, Ty Masterpool (caught up in turn two), and Anthony Rodriguez charged up to the rear fender of Friese, but none of them were able to make a pass. Nichols, Clason, Hand, and Friese claimed the four transfer spots in a race that was rather clean and not your typical hard, block passing carnage a 450SX LCQ usually brings.

Night Show

250SX Race 1

The gates dropped on the first race of the night, and it was Julien Beaumer and Levi Kitchen out front early. Beaumer had the advantage exiting the first turn, but Kitchen quickly jumped into the race lead before they came through to get the green flag. Jo Shimoda was trying to get around Beaumer for a handful of laps before finally making a pass stick. Quickly, Beaumer went from second to sixth as Jordon Smith, RJ Hampshire, and Nate Thrasher all followed Shimoda past the KTM rider. Still, a great ride by the #929 machine. Hampshire was all over Smith, but Smith had a triple-out line exiting one of the 180-degree turns that seemed to give him some breathing room on Hampshire. Kitchen checked out for the race win and took the checkered flag by 4.164 seconds over Shimoda.

450SX Race 1

The first 450SX race saw almost immediate carnage as Mitchell Oldenburg (who holeshot) came up short exiting the first rhythm section and caused a pileup with a handful of riders in the second turn, taking down himself, Chase Sexton, Jett Lawrence, Vince Friese, Adam Cianciarulo, Jett Lawrence, and more. Cianciarulo would not rejoin the race. Hunter Lawrence, who was right next to Oldenburg off the start, took over the race lead. However, the #96 had a crash of his own! Eli Tomac inherited the race lead. Chase Sexton remounted in 21st and had to charge forward to minimize the damage. Tomac was leading Plessinger and Ken Roczen. Then, smoke started to come out of the #94 Suzuki! Jett Lawrence (who was slowed up in the turn two pileup but stayed up) passed Roczen to take over third as the German started to drop down the results board. Jett Lawrence was able to make a nice pass on Plessinger for second but had a five-second gap on Tomac. As Tomac took the white flag, the #18 machine had five lappers right in front of him! And one of the lappers was Roczen! ET3 managed to navigate the lappers and took the race win with a 3.4-second gap. Jett Lawrence took second as Plessinger, Jason Anderson, and Cooper Webb rounded out the top five. Hunter Lawrence came through tenth after his crash while leading dropped him outside of the top ten. Sexton came through 10th in a great salvage job after being second to last when he re-started his bike. Roczen came through 18th.

250SX Race 2

The gates dropped and it was Ryder DiFrancesco grabbing the holeshot, although Levi Kitchen quickly jumped into the race lead. RJ Hampshire was seventh early on and had to get to work. Smith kept Kitchen honest in the early stages of the race, but Kitchen eventually opened up some breathing room. He would take the checkered flag, starting the night with two race wins, which puts him in a great spot for the overall heading into the third and final race. Smith came through second, then Shimoda, then Hampshire, then Nate Thrasher. Michael Mosiman crashed out of the race on the first lap and did not rejoin.

450SX Race 2

Jett Lawrence and Justin Cooper were side by side exiting the first turn. The #18 would jump into the race lead as Eli Tomac sat third, followed by Chase Sexton, Cooper Webb, Jason Anderson, Shane McElrath, Aaron Plessinger, and Hunter Lawrence. Ken Roczen was 20th early on after a bike issue led to a DNF in the first race. J. Lawrence and Tomac went back and forth as their gap tightened and widened, tightened and widened. Eventually, Jett Lawrence took the race win, but there was a red cross flag as Jett took the checkered flag. Usually, jumping on the red cross flag results in championship points, not race positions, so we expect Jett to keep the race win. We will provide more information when it becomes available.

Supercross Futures

Main Event

Hard to believe we already have an established set of stars within the Supercross Futures program this year, but early in this race it was time for an even younger set of riders to show what they had. While fast qualifiers and past race winners and podium riders like Drew Adams, Casey Cochran, and Cole Davies started a few spots back, it was Reven Gordon and Landon Gibson, who aren’t far removed from Supermini racing, leading the way. Gavin Towers was also up there but flipped in a rhythm section, and that also ended up taking down his fellow Pennsylvanian Luke Fauser.

Gibson and Gordon battled hard up front, but then Adams started to find his groove. He just motored through the field. He was eventually up to second, and then rolled around the outside of fellow Kawasaki Team Green rider Gordon to take the lead. From there he pulled away and sailed to his second-straight futures win, following up on victory at Daytona. Gibson, on the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna, regrouped late and passed Gordon to take second. Davies was strong late to steal the final podium spot from Gordon. Trevin Nelson, of Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha was fifth.

Update on 450SX Race 2 Results

Once the 250SX third race was complete, the 450SX race two results became official and boy is there a lot to note. Five riders were penalized: Jett Lawrence (2 positions), Cooper Webb (2 positions), Chase Sexton (2 positions),  Aaron Plessinger (2 positions), AND Jason Anderson (4 positions). Anderson is penalized four positions because he jumped on both the white flag lap AND the checkered flag lap.

Eli Tomac is officially awarded the race win. ET3 will enter the third and final race with 1-1 finishes.

250SX Race 3

The gates dropped on the third and final 250SX race and it was Levi Kitchen and Julien Beaumer out front again, just like the first race. RJ Hampshire quickly got into second place on the opening lap, whereas Ryder DiFrancesco went down after the supercross triple when he ran into the back of Beaumer. Hampshire was not letting Kitchen run away, although he did get close enough for a pass attempt. Kitchen held on for the race win, giving him a perfect sweep on the night. Hampshire came through second in the final race, but Jo Shimoda's 2-3-3 finishes gave him second overall on the night, then Jordon Smith's 3-2-4 was third overall. Hampshire's 4-4-2 was fourth overall as Nate Thrasher's 5-5-6 was fifth overall.

450SX Race 3

The third and final 450SX race gates dropped and it was Tomac who got the start and exited turn one ahead of the field. Chase Sexton and Cooper Webb were right there. While cutting under his brother to make a pass, Jett Lawrence got absolutely blasted by an unsuspecting Justin Barcia. The #18 machine went wide in the corner (that riders were typically either railing the outside berm or squaring up on the inside) and he tried to do both, by going outside and swinging inside, but Barcia was going inside and accidentally T-boned the championship leader. Barcia slammed on his front brake, doing a stoppie in the process, in order to avoid the Honda rider but there was nothing he could do. Jett Lawrence was thrown to the ground and was clearly in a lot of pain. Barcia stopped for a second and put his  hand up to his head as if to say, "I had no idea he was cutting down." He was tended to by the Alpinestars medical crew before getting on his bike and getting back on the track! He started jumping the jumps, although in dead last (21st technically, although Adam Cianciarulo did not start the race). Sexton and Webb were fighting over second as Tomac had began to check out. Webb would get by Sexton when the #1 doubled a supercross triple. Tomac took the race win and his 1-1-1 scores gave him the overall win. And just like that, Eli Tomac is a winner again. It was ET3's 52nd career 450SX win. Webb's 5-6-2 after penalties was second overall and Hunter Lawrence's 8-2-4 was third overall. What a wild, chaotic night of racing.
