Morning Report

Good morning race fans! Coming to you live from Budds Creek Motocross Park in Mechanicsville, Maryland, as we are set for round ten of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

We are expecting a high of about 85 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity around 75 percent and about 40 percent chance of rain today. Expect a warm day with some scattered rain showers throughout the day. Ezra Beasley’s “chocolate cake” dirt should provide us for another exciting race day.

With only two rounds to go in this championship, Haiden Deegan (Yamaha) has a 70-point lead with just 100 points available, so chances are Deegan will likely clinch the 250 Class title this weekend. Despite the #1 plate more than likely going to Deegan at the end of the day, we expect great battling from Deegan, Levi Kitchen, Jalek Swoll, Ty Masterpool, Tom Vialle, and more.

Note that Chance Hymas (banged up) is in, as is RJ Hampshire, who is making his 2024 Pro Motocross season debut. Casey Cochran (arm cut) and Jo Shimoda (broken collarbone) are out for this weekend. Hampshire told us Friday he honestly does not know how he will do today, he could either “blow up” and fade back or contender for a podium/win. Either way, the 2024 250SX West Region Champion is excited to be back at the races. As for Hymas, he is banged up but he was feeling well enough to ride two times this week and he is ready to come out swinging. Remember, due to his knee injury last year, this venue is all new to the Idaho native. Will he be able to pick up where he started off last weekend before his big crash?

RELATED: Budds Creek National Injury Report

In the premier class, Chase Sexton (KTM) enters with a 28-point lead over Hunter Lawrence (Hunter Lawrence). Cooper Webb is out for this weekend after spraining the same thumb that kept him sidelined for all summer when he debuted last weekend in New York. Eli Tomac (Yamaha) is in as he makes his respective season debut. Tomac told us Friday, “Oh yeah, I would not be happy with a fourth or a fifth! Definitely shooting a podium, yeah, that’s our mindset. Try and get some good starts.” So, expect to see Tomac fighting this weekend, although it will not be easy as Sexton and Lawrence have been on another level this summer, with Justin Cooper, Aaron Plessinger, and Jason Anderson also looking great as well. And Broc Tickle is making his second and final start of the summer as the full-time Kawasaki test rider planned to race this event back in July when it was announced he would be racing the RedBud National. Plus, battling for points for the SuperMotocross World Championship (SMX) should provide some great racing.

View the full race day schedule and check out the TV broadcast/streaming schedule below.

Qualifying will start at 8 a.m. local time (Eastern).

First Qualifying Sessions

250 Class

The track got some rain overnight but seemed to be in decent shape to start the day. In the first 250 Class group A qualifying session, Ty Masterpool was leading the field until Haiden Deegan put in a heater on the final lap to take the top spot. Deegan's 2:04.760 was the only sub-2:05 second lap as riders worked in the track. RJ Hampshire was third fastest in his first qualifying session of the season.

Second Qualifying Sessions

250 Class

The rain had stopped by the time the second 250 Class group A qualifying session began. Haiden Deegan was leading the session and eventually took the top time both in the session and overall on the day as his 2:04.760 from the first session was fastest. Tom Vialle and Ty Masterpool were both within a second of Deegan, in session two, although most of the times were fastest from session one. Deegan, who will almost certainly clinch the 250 championship this afternoon barring disaster, said he needed to prove he is still the fastest rider in the class. RJ Hampshire qualified third overall.

450 Class

With the rain having stopped for the 250 session, the 450 Class group A session saw a better track than their previous time around this morning during the downpour. Chase Sexton again bested the field, this time his 2:01.044 was the fast time to beat. Hunter Lawrence (2:01.255) and Justin Cooper (2:01.551) were within a second from the #4 machine as the fast lap from Eli Tomac (2:02.988) was just barely under two seconds behind. Whereas most riders were doing a hot lap or two then taking a cruise lap, Tomac was motoing down. Jason Anderson, who has been really fast here in previous years (winning the overall in 2022), was fifth fastest.

With little rain expected throughout the rest of the day, the track should be in great shape come the motos at 1 p.m.

First Motos

250 Class

The first 250 Class moto began, and it was Haiden Deegan from the inside taking the holeshot! There was a wild crash involving Ty Masterpool, Max Anstie, Mark Fineis, and almost a dozen other riders! Championship leader Deegan threw a huge whip as he hit the finish line jump for the first time! Levi Kitchen and Evan Ferry were behind the #38 machine but about two laps in Ferry was outside of the top 20. Kitchen made a mistake late in the moto, which allowed both Chance Hymas and Tom Vialle to get by. As they ran, Kitchen going from second to fourth would give Deegan the five-point buffer needed in order to clinch the title. Hymas crashed on the final lap and lost sixth positions, bumping him to ninth eighth place. Deegan let out a few big fist pumps as he took the checkered flag and rode to the podium. Vialle and Kitchen came through second and third, respectively, giving Deegan the title. What a season for the second-generation rider. Julien Beaumer and Joey Savatgy rounded out the top five. RJ Hampshire rode home a ninth-place finish.

450 Class

The gates dropped on the first 450 Class moto and it was Justin Cooper and Hunter Lawrence out front! Chase Sexton, on the very inside line that Deegan used in the first 250 moto, got pinched off my Cooper. But off the first big double, Cooper overjumped it and landed on Lawrence! Cooper went down and his #32 rode on the back of Lawrence’s Honda before going cartwheeling, but somehow the #96 machine stayed up. Aaron Plessinger snuck by and into the race lead as Lawrence was forced wide off the track. Luckily, no one hit Cooper, and he was able to remount his bike and eventually finish the race. A few laps later, Lawrence would get by Plessinger as they went over the famous Henry Hill. Eli Tomac and Jason Anderson passed into fourth and fifth, charging forward. Sexton made his way into second place after a pass on his teammate Plessinger. Sexton has closed up to with one second of Lawrence but then tipped over, giving the #96 some breathing room. Lawrence would hang on to take his third moto win of the season over Sexton, Plessinger, Tomac, and Anderson. Malcolm Stewart passed his teammate Christian Craig late in the race to take sixth (Craig seventh), as Phil Nicoletti (eight), Broc Tickle (ninth in just his third moto of the summer), and German Henry Jacobi (tenth) rounded out the top ten. Dean Wilson had an issue and he and his Honda CRF450R were taken off the track on a quad. Jerry Robin suffered a DNS as his engine blew up on the site lap.

Hunter Lawrence took his third moto win of the season in the first 450 Class moto.

Second Motos

250 Class

The 250 Class second moto gates dropped, and it was Levi Kitchen grabbing the holeshot and early race lead. Moto one winner and 2024 250 Champion Haiden Deegan was buried off the start, being in 15th early in the race. Chance Hymas started to challenge Kitchen for the race win as Jalek Swoll, Ty Masterpool, and Julien Beaumer rounded out the top five. Deegan made his way up tenth and then was engaged in a three-way battle with Nick Romano and RJ Hampshire as the trio fought over ninth! Kitchen would hold onto the race win and his 3-1 moto finishes would give him the overall win! That is three overall wins in the last four rounds as Kitchen looks to finish this season strong.
