  • Eli Tomac And Shane McElrath Crowned WSX Champions
Abu Dhabi, AZ Abu Dhabi GPFIM World Supercross Championship

The following is a press release from WSX:

The thrilling finale of the 2024 FIM World Supercross Championship (WSX) in Abu Dhabi crowned Eli Tomac (CDR Yamaha Supported by Star Racing), Shane McElrath (Fire Power Honda), and Fire Power Honda as champions in the WSX (450cc), SX2 (250cc), and Team categories, respectively.

The season's grand climax delivered on its promise, with fans in Etihad Arena witnessing an electrifying evening of world-class supercross action as the top riders battled for glory one last time.

The final round of racing saw series champion-elect Shane McElrath secure the top spot on the podium for the night, resulting in the overall SX2 Championship standings of Cole Thompson (Fire Power Honda) in third, Coty Schock (Rick Ware Racing) in second, and McElrath taking the title for Fire Power Honda.

In the WSX class, the three main protagonists of the night and the season fought fiercely across all races. The standings on the night finished with Ken Roczen (Pipes Motorsport Group) topping the podium following an impressive effort to claim back championship points on Eli Tomac (CDR Yamaha Supported by Star Racing), who finished second, and Joey Savatgy (Fire Power Honda) in third.

But Roczen’s charge wasn’t enough to stop Tomac, who ended up clinching the championship by 43 points over Roczen, with Savatgy completing the championship podium in third.

SX2 Highlights

The SX2 class saw a tight qualifying battle kickstart proceedings, with Cole Thompson, Shane McElrath, Enzo Lopes, and Cullin Park narrowly bumping Coty Schock out of the top four to advance to the SuperPole. Championship leader McElrath then demonstrated why he had such a commanding points lead coming into the final round, setting a blistering one-lap time of 39.237 to claim SuperPole. Thompson set the second-fastest time, with Lopes closely behind in third, followed by Park.

McElrath entered the GP races knowing that two wins would be enough to clinch the overall championship title. He delivered in style, securing back-to-back wins in the opening two races to seal the championship. The final moto followed a similar script, with McElrath completing a clean sweep of wins for the night to cement his dominance and thoroughly deserved title.

Reflecting on his achievement, McElrath said:

"Winning the championship overall is an incredible feeling, a testament to the hard work of everyone involved. Joining this team was a leap of faith, but it’s built lifelong bonds, and I’m thrilled for everyone on the team. Tonight was all about execution—staying clean early and setting the tone for the race. I pulled key holeshots, scored maximum points, and made history as the only SX2 rider to do so this year. This season was a strong restart for WSX, and the vision for the future excites me as we look ahead to next season—this is what we’re here for."

WSX Highlights

The racing kicked off with an intense qualifying session featuring the championship's most consistent contenders—Eli Tomac, Ken Roczen, and Joey Savatgy—alongside Greg Aranda (Team GSM), all advancing to the SuperPole.

In the SuperPole, the results mirrored the championship standings, with Tomac leading the pack at 38.420, followed by Roczen and Savatgy.

The GP races brought high-stakes drama as Tomac, Savatgy, and Roczen battled fiercely in the motos. Roczen emerged victorious in two of the three motos, while Vince Friese (MotoConcepts Racing) delivered an inspired performance to claim the first GP win of the night.

Ken Roczen reflected:

"I’m stoked to finish on a high note with two moto wins and never dropping below second out here in Abu Dhabi. The bike felt great, and the track flowed really well, making for an exciting end to the season. Congrats to Eli on a fantastic championship—I’m already looking forward to next year, improving my starts, and giving it another go at some exciting new locations!"

Ultimately, Eli Tomac was crowned a deserving World Supercross Champion. Speaking on his triumph, Tomac said:

"Becoming World Supercross Champion is an incredible feeling and a testament to our team’s hard work. We started strong with dominant wins and capped it off with a victory in Abu Dhabi, despite the challenges of a tight track. It’s been amazing competing against top riders from around the world, and I’m so proud to end the WSX season on the top step."
